The Hobbit: An Unexpected Movie?

Free Today on Amazon

On New Year’s Day, it was still quite cold here on the Colorado front range. Perfect weather to settle down for a long afternoon matinee at the movie theater. I’ve been hankering to see “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” since I saw the first trailer almost a year ago.

Hobbit Poster

I loved it! With the minor caveat that it was too long. Certain scenes were padded or added to the original story that didn’t need to be there. At the same time, there were certain additions that I very much enjoyed. For me, “The Hobbit” is a familiar story and these additions made it more of an unexpected journey.  No worries, no spoilers. Seeing for yourself is highly recommended.

If you’ve already seen the movie, you might want to check out this article on The Daily Beast: ‘The Hobbit’: 19 Changes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Novel to Peter Jackson’s Movie. It’s interesting reading, though I don’t agree with some of what’s written. In particular (not a spoiler), I’ve read here and elsewhere that Thorin Oakenshield is portrayed as more noble in the movie than he is in the novel. I disagree. I’ve always viewed Thorin as a noble warrior prince. I reread “The Hobbit” in December and stand by my opinion.

“The Hobbit” is available in digital format, though not for free or even cheap. It can be picked up on Amazon for $7.29, which is still less than the new paperback version. If you don’t want to spend that much, you might want to look for an old copy in a used bookstore, though they might be a little harder to find since the movie came out.

If you’ve read “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, you may be interested in today’s freebie, a reader and teacher’s guide to these books, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

In honor of Hobbits and their love of food, particularly breakfast, I’ve also included two free-for-now breakfast cookbooks. I’ve already had my first breakfast. Perhaps it’s time to start planning my second breakfast. Bilbo would surely approve. 🙂

Addendum

Today, January 3, I found two more free-for-now Hobbit-related books that look interesting, so I added them here. One of the breakfast cookbooks is no longer free, so I posted it’s price.

Free Games for Kindle eReaders

A lot of Kindle owners aren’t aware there are games for their devices. I’m not talking about the Kindle Fire, which has apps galore. I mean the E Ink eReaders like the Kindle Touch.

I particularly appreciate games when I’m traveling and have to spend time in a plane. I’m one of those people who can’t read while flying. It makes me feel sick. For some reason, games don’t affect me the same way. I have games on my phone, but staring at a small screen for too long gives me eyestrain. So, I was delighted to find free games for the Kindle.

Below, I’ve listed three of my favorite games. You can find more free games by Amazon Digital Services by clicking here.

  Every Word
If you like word scrambles then Every Word is the game for you. Test your vocabulary as you try to find as many words from the scrambled letters in this fun and fast-paced word game. You are given five to seven scrambled letters with the goal of finding as many words as you can. You score points by filling out the words in each empty spot on the board using only the letters that appear at the top of the game board. Keep at it until time runs out or until you fill up the board. The more words you make, the higher your score!

  Blackjack
Blackjack – one of the most popular casino card games of all time is now available on Kindle. The Kindle version features all of the most common aspects of the game including splits, double down, surrender and insurance, as well as multiple options for customization that allow you to play the style of Blackjack that you want to play. For example, you can configure the game to match specific structures like ‘Dealer must hit soft 17’ – a common rule variation in many Las Vegas casinos.

  Video Poker
Video Poker accurately simulates the Vegas-style video poker machine known as Jacks or Better. After making a bet, you will be dealt five cards. You select which of these five cards to hold, and redraw the rest to try to make the best poker hand possible. A hand with a pair of Jacks or better wins. The built-in Strategy feature, which you can turn on and off at any time, will provide recommendations for how to play given the hand you were dealt, and will give you hints on how to improve if you fail make the best move. This guidance will help you learn how to play the game, and how to maximize your payouts.

Kindle Freebies – June 19, 2012

Today I Loaded My Kindle With…

Top Sights Travel Guides is offering up some exciting Asian locations, including one high on my bucket list, Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay

Public domain photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

I fell in love with Ha Long Bay while watching the movie, “Indochine.” The place looked so magical, I could barely believe it was real. My husband, who is Vietnamese, assured me it is real and told me the name, Ha Long, means descending dragon and the rock formations mark where a dragon literally descended into the bay. I knew I had to go. Here’s hoping sooner rather than later!

Before continuing on with the freebies I picked up, I did want to let everyone know that Amazon is having one of their Big Deals. Over 400 Kindle books are being offered for $3.99 or less. This offer lasts until June 24, 2012. I haven’t picked up anything yet, but I am tempted by more than a few items. Most of these books are being offered at a significant discount, so check ’em out while you can.

Today’s other freebies include the usual mishmash of fiction, a blogging idea book, a game and a somewhat controversial recipe book. “Dinner for One” has some low-starred reviews, but I like the concept because I’m at home for lunch and would like some recipes for wholesome single servings. After reading the reviews, it turns out that some people were put out by the use of the metric system and the Swiss author’s dislike of microwave ovens. When I lived in Denmark, I didn’t have a microwave oven, and after some mopey moments, I adapted quite nicely. Steam is your friend when it comes to heating up leftovers. Anyway, I took a look at the sample, liked what I saw and grabbed this book.

Kindle Freebies – June 18, 2012

Today I Loaded My Kindle With…

A handful of novels, a novella, a couple of fabulous looking cookbooks (Irish recipes! pie!), a nutrition guide, a word game, city guides you won’t want to miss (Tokyo! Toledo!), and a superhero reference guide.

Speaking of superheroes, yes, I had a fantastic time on Saturday at Denver Comic Con. It was nothing like the glorious monstrosities that are the New York and San Diego cons. No huge corporate booths, A-list stars or previews of upcoming movies and TV shows. The relatively small venue (just a portion of the convention center) was packed with a friendly,  enthusiastic and costumed crowd.

In case you need further proof of what a geek I really am…

Me at Denver Comic Con

No, the Doctor wasn’t home.

Lots of families showed up and there were plenty of activities for kids. I got a real kick out of seeing kids and their hero or villain swagger.

There was lots to see and a decent amount of panels to attend. Kudos to the organizers for getting a first year event off the ground so smoothly.

Onto to the freebies!

Fiction

His three and a half year old son was bitten on the leg, but doesn’t turn into a zombie. Instead, he turns into something more than human. Victor quickly discovers that everything he knew about zombies was wrong. Not all of them were mindless, uncoordinated, rotting ghouls; some of them were bigger, faster, stronger or smarter than when they were human.

Homes for Gnomes by Stewart Thompson
‘Homes for Gnomes’ is a humorous novel that looks at how people and organisations try to cope with the discovery of real gnomes. Initially the gnomes are seen as a curiosity, a tourist attraction and an endangered species. This changes rapidly as the gnomes go thorough a population explosion and their underlying nature becomes apparent. Increasing conflict between Gnomes and Humans builds steadily until the Ratley family decides to eradicate the gnomes from their back garden. Meanwhile the Local Council decides to forcibly re-house them onto a purpose built “Homes for Gnomes” estate. They do this under the misguided belief that gnomes are really just like little humans. This turns out to be as sensible as moving badgers into bungalows.

The Prisoner (The Dark Elf of Syron, #1) by Laura Lond
Captain Torren, the warden of the Dormigan Prison, knows that the mysterious Prisoner 34 is much more dangerous than the authorities think. Torren does his best to guard him, going so far as to break some of his orders, but the new governor’s sudden wish to personally inspect the prison threatens to destroy the shaky balance the warden has achieved. Will the Prisoner comply and help Torren through the inspection? What will he ask in return? And will he keep his word?

Susanna and the Spy by Anna Elliott

Pie. Delicious pie. Is there anything more wonderful than homemade pie? I don’t think so. I love pie, and I love making them. I don’t, however, like to work so hard that I can’t enjoy the pie later. These recipes are all easy, don’t require a lot of skill in the kitchen, and they don’t take a great deal of time. Kindle Freebies – June 8, 2012

Today I Loaded My Kindle With…

Too many freebies that were too good to pass up.

Fiction downloads include scifi, dystopia, fantasy and a horror anthology with an irresistible title.

For recipes, an evil wonderful author has released a batch of cookbooks on dangerous delicious topics such as muffins and cupcakes. Drool.

Travel includes the usual city guides, plus a book on traveling alone. I traveled alone through Spain and it was an exhilarating and sometimes frightening experience. Though I had a “Let’s Go” travel guide, it was mostly by the seat of my pants. A guide like this could have been useful.

Finally, a three-in-one puzzle book game.

With all that, I’m bound to have a good weekend. Enjoy your weekend, too!

Fiction

The corporation (in search of radical space travel methods) sends Titus (in search of Johanna and Sydney) back through the space-time warp. There, he gradually, painfully regains knowledge of its rulers, the cruel, alien Tarig; its subordinate, Chinese-inspired humanoid population, the Chalin; and his daughter’s enslavement. Titus’s transformative odyssey to reclaim Sydney reveals a Tarig plan whose ramifications will be felt far beyond his immediate family. Kenyon’s deft prose, high-stakes suspense and skilled, thorough world building will have readers anxious for the next installment. (From Publisher’s Weekly)

Seven Reasons To Go Travelling Solo by Chris Mitchell
Seven Reasons author Chris Mitchell writes: Solo travelling changed my life. I left England in December 2002 to backpack in Australia, thinking I would travel for six months, a year at most. That was 10 years ago. I never went home. I ended up living in Thailand by accident and continuing to travel extensively across South East Asia, driven by a passion for scuba diving that I only discovered because of travelling. Quite early on I posted an article on TravelHappy called Seven Reasons To Go Travelling Solo. The ongoing response to that article has been huge, sparking hundreds of comments and emails from people wanting to travel alone. This ebook collects and updates the original Seven Reasons essay along with other useful and inspirational articles from TravelHappy to help and reassure those of you who want to travel solo. I’ve also included a previously Solo Travelling FAQ answering the most common solo travel questions posed by readers.

Kindle Freebies – June 6, 2012

Today I Loaded My Kindle With…

Science fiction, fantasy and horror, though I would say the genres cross in nearly all the books. Included in this batch is a novella by Nancy Kress. Readers of Writer’s Digest magazine will probably be familiar with her excellent articles on the craft of writing fiction. She is also the author of a writing guide I highly recommend, “Beginnings, Middles and Ends.”

No recipe or travel books caught my eye today, but I did pick up a few games. I find there is something very relaxing about playing games on the Kindle. The screen is a good size for a handheld device and the E ink display is easy on the eyes.

Fiction

Act One by Nancy Kress
One of the best of the year…a compelling novella about a once-famous actress and her devoted manager who get much more publicity of an unfortunate sort when they inadvertently become embroiled with an act of biological terrorism with potentially world-changing results.

The Soulkeepers by G. P. Ching
When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother’s car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can’t find his mother’s body. A beautiful and mysterious neighbor offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. But in exchange she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a protector of human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother’s disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions her motives for helping him.

Monster: Nightrider’s Vengeance by J.D. Nixx
It was an idea born from the madness of the Colony Wars: create living weapons in the shape of man’s ancient nightmares. Vampires. Werewolves. Zombies. They turned the tide of war and broke the back of the rebellion. But no one stopped to ask what they would do with a unit of Special Operations-trained vampires when the war was over. Not until it was too late, and the only solution was to try to wipe them out, using a bioweapon tailored to their unique genetic structure. One survived.

Terrene: the Hidden Valley by Eric Liu
In the isolated rural valley of Terrene, where technology is grown, not manufactured, Flora Karachi paints her anguish with flowers and yearns to travel outside the mountain walls that guard her village. But in a society which values harmony and symmetry above all else, her dangerous curiosity and her indelicate scars, earned from a lifetime of inexplicable blackouts, make her an outcast with few prospects for adventure. Then the dreams come. Lucid and overpowering, they throw Flora into a fascinatingly advanced world where she lives the life of Jane Ingram, an American scientist fighting global climate change while trying to raise a child in a society where interpersonal interaction is becoming obsolete. Flora’s blackouts open a window into knowledge lost long ago and possibilities that are yet to come. To unravel these mysteries, she must travel to the enigmatic Institute, an ancient enclave hidden in the surrounding mountains, where scholars guard the secrets of Terrene.

Perpetual Night by Georgina Morales
Lilibeth is a sweet fifteen-year-old with a great relationship with her Mom but recently she’s been plagued by nightmares. When her dreams start to permeate her everyday activities she wonders about her grip on reality. Every nightmare becomes more frightening and ominous figures follow her during day; will she be finally institutionalized by her worried Mother or is it all real and she’s about to receive a great gift from beyond?

Games

Every Word: Crossings
Every Word: Crossings is a word game in which you try to unscramble letters to fill in as many words as you can on a crossword style grid. You are given five to seven scrambled letters with the goal of finding as many words as you can. When you find a word it gets added to the crossword style grid, which gives you clues about the words that intersect with the word you just found. You score points by filling out the words in each empty spot on the crossword grid. When you find a word that uses all available letters, you can move on to the next level, or keep at it until time runs out or until you fill up the board. The more words you make, the higher your score!

Jigsaw Words Volume 2
Jigsaw Words Volume 2 is a word game that challenges you to combine groups of letters into words that match the clues given. This update to the popular Jigsaw Words gives you 100 new puzzles and each puzzle has 10 clues to solve.
