Eurovision 2015 – Iceland

I’m finishing my reviews of the Nordic competitors with Iceland. In 2012, my first year as a Eurovision fan, Gréta Salóme & Jónsi were high among my favorite competitors, second only to the winner, the magnificent Loreen. Since then, Iceland’s songs have stayed in my top 10. Can 2015’s entry keep this country’s place in my heart?

Maria Olafs won the national competition and will fly the Icelandic flag in Vienna with her song Unbroken.

This was really nice. Pretty girl, great voice, decent dance moves. The song reminds me of Frozen’s Let It Go. Not in a bad, copycat way. I mean in the way it starts out down and sad, and becomes uplifting as a young woman sings about finding her true self. It’s not quite hitting my sweet spot, though. There’s nothing that really makes it stand out for me.  Maybe after a few more listens, I’ll enjoy it more.

Or maybe not.

I can’t say yet if Unbroken will be in my top 10 or even the Eurovision top 10. I feel pretty confident in saying that Maria Olafs will make it to the final performance. She’s enchanting to watch and it’s hard to believe people won’t to see more of her.

As a side note, I just have to say: Maria, I love your real last name, Ólafsdóttir! I don’t know why you decided to shorten it.
