Kindle Freebies – June 27, 2012

Today I Loaded My Kindle With…

A new brand of city guides has appeared on the horizon, “48 Hours In…” The three cities listed in freebies are London, Paris and Barcelona. I’ve been to all three cities, but it’s been awhile and I would love to visit them again. I spent more like 24 hours in Paris. London, of course, is the hot destination this summer because of the Olympics.

I’m seriously thinking about returning to London this fall. I was last there in 2009 and much of the city was covered with scaffolding as its facelift for the Olympics was underway. Had a great time, even when a deluge soaked us to the bone during a Jack the Ripper tour.

Other freebies include the usual mix of genre fiction and an unusual mix of recipe books – breakfast tacos, British cookery and fresh ingredient microwave meals. I also picked up a formatting book for the Kindle. Nowadays, there are a number of get-rich-quick-on-the-Kindle! books out there, along with sell-a-gazillion-books-using-Twitter!, and on and on. It boggles the poor author’s mind. One wants to be informed, but not misled. I steer clear of the more extravagant claims, even if they are free. This book looks like it’s simply about formatting, which could be very useful. I’ve picked up a number of books that could have done with better formatting.

Fiction

A Pemberley Medley (A Pride & Prejudice Variation) by Abigail Reynolds
Five short Pride & Prejudice variations by bestselling writer Abigail Reynolds gathered in one volume. Can Mr. Darcy win Elizabeth Bennet’s heart… or will they misunderstand each other forever? Can he stand by and watch Elizabeth lose everything she holds precious… including him?

Cerulean Isle by G.M. Browning
Kidnapped as a boy and kept as a slave on a pirate ship, young Jacob dreams of freedom, and of discovering the fabled island of the Mer people. With fellow shipmate Grant, Jacob escapes and finds refuge in Granada. But stories of Cerulean Isle, land of the Merfolk, continue to haunt him. One day a stranger appears, forcing Jacob and Grant to confront their past. They must embark on a dangerous voyage to flee from the pirates that seek their lives. In the process, Jacob at last discovers the truth behind legendary Cerulean Isle.

The Butterfly Forest by Tom Lowe
After 40 years in San Quentin, Luke Palmer leaves with a state-issued suit, $100 dollars to buy a bus ticket, and a map that will lead to a promise and into the heart of a dark forest. College graduate student Molly Monroe is about to release rare butterflies not far from where the FBI used 4,000 bullets in a shootout to kill Ma Barker and one of her gangster sons in 1935. Molly snaps a picture that will frame something she never sees coming.

The Micro-Age by Cixin Liu
The Forerunner now knew that he was the only person left in the universe. It had already happened. HNS Ark truly had become a true ark; An Ark with a lone Noah. Of the other seven Forerunners four had been killed by radiation when a star exploded in a nova four light years from the Ark, two had succumbed to illness, one man had, in the silence of that fateful slow-down, shot himself. The Ark returned to the Solar System, 25,000 years after its departure from Earth; 9,000 years later than first planned.
